In the summer of 2021, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics were held, and the 42.195 km course running through the City of Sapporo was chosen for the marathon, the main event.

Since 1987, the Hokkaido Marathon, held in late August, has been considered a qualifying race for the World Athletics Championships and the Olympics.

Additionally, many citizen runners participate in the Sapporo Marathon, a civic marathon held in early October.

There are many running enthusiasts in Sapporo, and running is a popular part of the lives of its citizens.

"Sapporo City RUN" introduces recommended courses in the City of Sapporo where each runner can run "easily and comfortably" according to their own pace.

When you want to run lightly

Nakajima Park course
(approx. 1 km per lap)

Nakajima Park, which is located in the center of Sapporo but offers beautiful scenery throughout the seasons, has a course that is approximately 1 km in length.
The circular course, which even beginners can enjoy at a leisurely pace, has distance indicators every 250 m, making it easy to set your goals.
Intermediate and advanced athletes can do 20 to 40 laps to get solid training for a half or full marathon.

When you want to run hard

Munich-ohashi Bridge course
(approx. 10 km)

The riversideof the Toyohira River is a flat, easy-to-run course with no traffic lights.
Many runners run here even in winter, and the snow is often trodden down, so you can enjoy a stress-free run on the snow.
The Munich-ohashi Bridge, named after the German city of Munich, which has a sister-city relationship with the City of Sapporo, is also recommended for a night run as it is lit up at night.
A popular course among runners of Sapporo Machi RUN Nakajima Park.

Walking around the Tokyo Olympic nameplate

Olympic Memorial course
(approx. 12 km)

This is a course where you can experience the legacy of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games by visiting commemorative nameplates at the 5 km and 10 km marks in the first half of the marathon course and the start/finish points.
There is one uphill section along the way, but it is relatively flat and easy to run.
Along the road of Hiragishi street, where the 10 km nameplate is located, there are many cafes and gourmet spots where you can order takeout, so you can even enjoy a gourmet run! Recommended for beginners as well.

"Sapporo Machi Run Guide" are also available at the gymnasiums of each ward

The term Machi means city in Japanese and Machi RUN is the activity of running in and around the city.
